3. In Southern Ethiopia longer lips are considered a sign of beauty. When a girl hits puberty in Southern Ethiopia, she has to start the process of stretching her lips. Family also help them in stretching their lips until it reaches as long as 18 to 20 centimeters in diameter.
Once the lip reaches to its desired size, the woman put a decorated plate in her lip which is a sign of tradition in marital rituals in their culture.
Tourists like to visit them to see the stretched lips of their women.
The lip plates signifies a number of reasons. Some said it is a sign of wealth, importance or power while some said it was to make the women less attractive for outside traders. Others also said lip plates signifies the amount of dowry a father can ask for.
